Good bye 2011

Tal y como están las cosas es mejor no pedir nada a los reyes, así que he decidido felicitar el nuevo año con Don Draper, al que veremos pronto en la 5º temporada de Mad Men.

Don Draper sonríe al 2012, espero que nosotros también podamos hacerlo.

La verdad es que si el 2010 fue durisimo para mi, este 2011 no lo ha sido menos. Los dolores musculares me han acosado desde febrero, la pasta y los trabajos remunerados han escaseado. Con respecto a los dolores llevo tiempo intentándolos curar, sobre los trabajos remunerados, que voy a contar...

Por lo demás, he hecho varias exposiciones: Sala Clara Campoamor y Gaztebulegoa en Barakaldo. Además de colaborar en algunas "Walking Gallery", he participado en varias colectivas: "The Other Face Design" en la Galería NoColor, "Almas Líquidas" en la sala Ganbara y la de "Fin de año de RumblE" en BAZAWP, ambas están aun abiertas al publico.

En primavera tuve mi momento de gloria publicando en la revista Glamour. Mis ilustraciones han aparecido en un montón de webs y revistas internacionales online: Platform58, Catapult, default magazine, Voûte, La Revista Artistas Sin Fronteras. También me han hecho varias entrevistas en algunos blogs: Illustration Rally, Leivos, y  Uno de los nuestros. Desde aquí os agradezco vuestro apoyo y os deseo que la fuerza os acompañe en el próximo año.

PAINT IT! MAKE IT! Party for Japan

If you are in London on 25th june, you should go to "PAINT IT! MAKE IT!", the first fantastic art event of Illustration Rally. Interview for Illustration Rally

The following appeared in Illustration Rally blog three days ago.

Who are you:

Hi! My name is Carmen Ortiz, I´m a self-taught artist born in Bilbao.

What do you do:

I do freelance work as illustrator for some magazines. I specialize in portraits drawn by hand, using graphite pencils. I'm skilled at drawing realistic, almost picture like portraits. I’m quite old fashioned in my process; everything starts with a pencil and a good photo. I like to capture features, expressions, personalities and light. Sometimes my illustrations are digitally enriched with a littletouch of color

I took some courses in web and graphic design and occasionally do commissioned works. At the moment I am focusing on selling my artwork, preparing some exhibitions and post on my blog every day.

How did you start:

I love to draw since as long as I can remember. I have always known that it was all I wanted to do. I used to spend my spare time drawing with my sisters. I began drawing portraits at the age of 14 trying to draw people pictured on magazines. I have always found people features fascinating.

A Personal statement about you or your work:

The road to becoming a freelance illustrator is a difficult one, but you don’t need permission or approval to be you and do what you do. My goal is to create images straight from the heart and improve day by day.

I'm used to working listening good music. Photographers such as Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Hedi Slimane, Rankin and Tom Hoops are a big influence on my work. I also take a lot of inspiration from art, classic films, book and fashion.

La ilustradora y creadora de este blog, Natsuki Otani, se ha volcado con la causa japonesa y ha propuesto a los ilustradores participar en varias iniciativas bajo el lema de "Don't give up Japan". Si queréis participar en esta buena causa podéis informaros aquí.

Ideal dinner party guests

A finales del 2009 la ilustradora Natsuki Otani creo el blog Illustration Rally para dar a conocer a artistas de todas partes del mundo. Cada mes suelen proponer temas para que los ilustradores que quieran colaboren con sus propuestas, siendo un estupendo escaparate para que dar a conocer sus trabajos.

La semana pasada el tema era "Invitados ideales a una cena", proponían ilustrar a Nick Cave, Bjork, Marianne Faithfull y David Lynch. Aquí os dejo un link para que veáis mis ilustraciones.
